Food & Wine has named Detroit America’s next great beer city, saying The D is “poised to become an international craft beer destination.”
Detroit is home to more than a dozen independent breweries and beer-focused bars; and, on December 4, 2017, “one of the nation’s most beloved beermakers,” Founders, is opening its first new location in its 20-year history in Midtown.
What does this mean for the City?
With its cult-like following and tens of thousands of annual visitors, Founders “helped turn downtown Grand Rapids from a post-industrial wasteland into a national beer mecca.” The hope is the same for Detroit.
“Founders has a dedicated, hard-core customer base,” says Susan Mosey, executive director of Midtown Detroit, Inc. “We have a lot of very local breweries opening but bringing in a large brand with a large reach will drive a lot of (outside) traffic into the neighborhood.”
The 14,000-square-foot Founders site will include a brewery, taproom and restaurant.
